Discussion Points from Mark Quinn, Director of Cold Northcott Windfarm – 10th June 2025
- Wind farm history:
- This was the first wind farm in the UK, located at Cold Northcott and has been operating since 1991.
- A single turbine at Otterham in 2011 and had the highest energy output in the world at the time.
- Initially there were negative public comments however these faded, and local support increased over time.
- Turbines are now more efficient, with an operational efficiency rate of 99.2%.
- Community and Environmental Impact:
- All staff and contractors are local.
- The land footprint of turbines is minimal.
- A grid connection is already available.
- We attended Parish Council meetings at: Davidstow, Tresmeer, St Clether, and Laneast.
- The proposal has the support of three ward members.
- The project is expected to generate 66 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.
- Payment of business rates totalling £16 million.
- The project is subsidy free.
- There are no expected negative impacts to the village.
- Planning and Application Updates:
- Cold Northcott was originally operated by EDF, and the site was later taken over by Mark Quinn.
- Cornwall Council requested the site be repowered, but a full planning application could not initially be submitted.
- An amended application was granted in 2020 and a new application has now been submitted
- If permission is granted at the meeting this week, there may be a need to change the turbine model, depending on timing.
- Below-ground cabling is planned.
